Quilt Exhibits
Judged Competition Rules
(Over $30,000 in Awards)

All entries must be machine quilted – either with a Conventional sewing machine, where the quilter sits down and moves the quilt under the machine to quilt it; or with a Longarm (or Shortarm) machine, where the quilt layers are set up on three rollers and the quilter stands and moves the machine over the quilt to quilt it.

  • You may enter up to two (2) cloth quilts by submitting the required entry form, photographs, and fees. Exception: A “Show Chair’s Choice: Good Enough to Eat!” category entry will not count as one of your two entries. (So, essentially, you may enter up to three quilts…if one is “Good Enough to Eat!”)
  • Incomplete entries will not be accepted. Each quilt must have a 4" (finished) sleeve securely attached to the top back of the quilt and an identifying label (name, address, telephone number, and quilt name) on the back in the lower left corner. (See sleeve directions in the Registration Booklet.)
  • Please complete one form per Judged entry.
  • QTW 2006 Faculty members are not eligible for this Judged Competition. In the case of a Two-Person entry, a Faculty member may not enter, but may be one of the two people involved. If one of these quilts wins a cash award, the Faculty member will receive a ribbon only. The prize money will be donated to a charity of her/his choice.
  • All decisions of the jurors and judges are final. QTW reserves the right to reject any entry, including those that fail to follow the contest rules, that exhibit poor quality construction, have been misrepresented by the photographs, are soiled or stained, or do not adhere to the size restrictions.
  • The non-refundable fee for each quilt entered is $15 USD. Make check or money order payable to: Quilting on the Waterfront~Machines in Motion. For entries from outside the United States, an international money order is required.
    Categories Size
All All quilts and wallhangings must not exceed 110” in width. For quilts longer than 96” - the 4” attached sleeve must be placed so the measurement from the bottom of the sleeve to the bottom of the quilt equals 92”.
Large Perimeter (total measurement of all sides) must be larger than 300” (twin size).
Wall Perimeter (total measurement of all sides) must be larger than 120” and not more than 300”.
  • All entries in the Judged category must have been completed on or after January 1, 2004. Quilts entered in Quilting on the Waterfront~Machines in Motion 2004 are not eligible.
  • You must enter in the appropriate category, which indicates whether the quilting was done on a Conventional sewing machine or a Longarm (or Shortarm) quilting machine, and you must state who actually did the machine quilting. Please also indicate, for our records, whether or not a computerized machine quilting program or software was used on your entry.
  • Two (2) 4" by 6" color photographs are required for each entry. One photograph must be a full front view of the finished entry, including binding. The second photograph must be a close-up of one area of the finished entry, showing the quilting. Unfinished entries are not eligible. High quality photography is essential for a fair jury process – please provide high quality images. Label your photographs in permanent ink with the following information:
Top of image / Name of entrant / Title of Quilt / Size in length and width

  • Mail entries to: Nancy Butler, PO Box 7227, Duluth, MN 55807. Enclose a business size (#10) self-addressed, 78¢ stamped envelope for each entry for use in QTW’s responding with notification and shipping information.
  • The fee to return a quilt via UPS after the show will be approximately $20. Detailed information will be provided upon acceptance into the quilt competition.
